2023 Annual Market Research
State of the US Economy
In another unprecedented year economically, we are yet again faced with the challenges that many are staring at, which is the loom of a pending recession alongside record-level inflation and unemployment rates. Industry-leading economists can't even agree with what is best to prepare for, so imagine our conundrum in attempting to identify ranges and forecasts for how best to move into another fiscal year.
As a result of so much potential uncertainty for what lies ahead, we relied on historical data to make our decisions for this upcoming year. Including monthly market research for each region we staff, as well as inflation and cost of living research conducted by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics.
As we analyze the landscape, in preparation for contract renewals with our clients and agreement negotiations with our contractors, we conduct research to determine how we stand within the current market. What follows, is the data collected. We use this data to help support the decisions we make internally in order to remain a competitive option in the job market while providing the most value possible to our clients.
In our estimation, overall the data is looking better than it was this time last year. For example, there are currently 9.9M Job Openings, with also 9.9M Unemployed Persons; making an equal number of job openings as there are unemployed people. In comparison, if we look back to 2022, there were 11M job openings and 5M people unemployed. More than double the number of job openings for unemployed people. As well, inflation is down to 5% nationally (San Diego = 5.3% , Napa = 5.3% , OC/LA = 3.7%, Sac = 6%) compared to the 7.9% it was up last year.

*where appropriate, a total of 2,080 hours per year is used to determine the hourly rate of annual salaries. This is a well-documented total calculated by multiplying 40hrs/wk by 52 weeks. Despite most ATs working more than 40 hours per week or less than 52 weeks, we used a standardized average to stay consistent with standardized data
